UMW TOYOTA MOTOR UNVEILS 'BEYOND ZERO' INITIATIVE Pioneering Sustainable Mobility in Malaysia: Economic Diversification and Energy Security in Focus

Shah Alam, 20th February 2024 – UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), the leading non-national automaker, introduced its transformative Beyond Zero initiative, aligning with Toyota's global commitment to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The event, taking place at the Technology Park Malaysia from today until 28 February, showcased innovative initiatives demonstrating the brand's dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

The initiative reflects UMWT's promise to lead the way towards a sustainable and interconnected future, going beyond traditional automotive norms. It envisions a society where individuals pursue happiness by making choices that align with their values and lifestyles—a multiple pathway approach towards Carbon Neutrality.

Speaking at the event, Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMWT, acknowledged the diverse challenges and opportunities across nations as they champion a multi-pathway approach, taking into account each country's national interests and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recognizing Malaysia's position as a major electrical and electronics manufacturing hub in Southeast Asia, he stressed the importance of positioning the country appropriately in the journey towards sustainability.

The Beyond Zero event symbolically launched with various electrified technologies, including Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Battery Electric Vehicles, and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. UMWT showcased its Hybrid Electric Vehicles, which have made a significant impact on the Malaysian market since 2009, resulting in commendable decarbonization effects.

The Beyond Zero event, open to a wide audience from 20 to 28 February 2024, aims to encourage participation and awareness regarding sustainability initiatives and new technologies. From hybrid electric vehicles to hydrogen fuel cell technology, the initiative signifies Toyota's commitment to innovation and a green, low-carbon ecosystem for all Malaysians, marking a significant milestone in UMW Toyota Motor's journey towards sustainable mobility.

YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, who officiated the event, commended UMWT for its commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. The Minister emphasized the urgency of Malaysia's transition to sustainable energy, fueled by global commitments and the potential for economic diversification and energy security. Malaysia's recognition as the best country in Southeast Asia in the Energy Transition Index 2023 by the World Economic Forum aligns with Toyota's innovative efforts in clean energy.

The event showcased UMWT's dedication to aligning its practices with broader national and global efforts to combat climate change and foster sustainable development. Toyota's multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality includes various electrification solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of customers and regions.

For the first time, UMWT presented Battery Electric Vehicles and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, featuring models like the stylish bZ4X, tough Hilux BEV, and environmentally friendly two-seater ultra-compact BEV, C+pod. The Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle lineup included advanced models like the Toyota Mirai FCEV, GranAce FCEV, Hilux FCEV, and the hydrogen-powered SORA bus.

Toyota's investment in fuel cell technology for over 30 years was highlighted, emphasizing the advantages of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, such as quick refueling and a longer driving distance. UMWT's presentation emphasized a comprehensive range of innovative, eco-friendly technologies and models, aligning with the company's commitment to sustainable mobility solutions for every customer's needs.
