The Evolution of Luxury:

The New E-Class

A 75-Year Legacy of Innovation

For over 75 years, the E-Class has set the benchmark for mid-range luxury sedans. In 2024, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is introducing a new chapter in this legacy with an advanced digital user experience, revolutionizing the business sedan category.

Amanda Zhang, CEO & President of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, describes the new E-Class as both a bold leap and a natural evolution in luxury. “It is the most intelligent business sedan ever, designed to learn and adapt to your lifestyle,” says Zhang. She emphasizes the versatility of the model, which ranges from refined combustion engines to advanced plug-in hybrids, offering a personalized driving experience that redefines luxury.

Elegant Design Meets Innovation

The new E-Class retains the classic saloon proportions with a sleek "cab-backward" design. A three-centimeter longer wheelbase offers spacious interiors while enhancing the car's dynamic profile. The radiator grille and headlamps are connected by a striking black panel, emphasizing modernity. On the side, seamless door handles and distinctive character lines highlight the car’s athletic stance, especially on the AMG Line-equipped E 350 e.

Advanced MBUX Technology

The new generation MBUX system makes the E-Class smarter and more intuitive than ever. A software-driven architecture enables faster processing, ensuring seamless integration across all displays. The E 350 e’s 3D driver display provides a spatial, depth-enhanced view, taking personalization to a new level.

With AI-powered routines, the E-Class learns and automates repetitive tasks, like opening windows at specific locations or turning on seat ventilation. The system adapts to your preferences, offering suggestions without needing complex voice commands or menu navigation.

Nadia Trimmel, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, highlights the E-Class’s new digital and AI capabilities. The MBUX Superscreen, available in the top variant, offers an immersive dashboard experience, while the Burmester 4D Surround Sound System transforms every drive into an auditory masterpiece. With an electric range of up to 118 km in the E 350 e, and additional power in the E 200’s mild hybrid system, the new E-Class combines performance and sustainability.

At the rear, two-section LED taillights with a unique star motif ensure the car is instantly recognizable, day or night. High-performance LED headlamps in the E 200 and DIGITAL LIGHT technology in the E 350 e offer precision lighting for optimum visibility, enhancing both safety and style.

Exclusive to the E 350 e, the panoramic sliding sunroof floods the cabin with natural light, adding a touch of luxury to every journey.

Enhanced Voice Control and Entertainment

The "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant is now even more intelligent, activated without a keyword when you’re alone in the car. This feature allows you to control various car functions and even assists with connecting smartphones.

Entertainment is also fully integrated, with music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music directly available in the MBUX system. Up to seven different user profiles can be created, allowing for personalized settings that transfer across other Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Digital Vehicle Key and App Integration

The new E-Class supports Digital Vehicle Key technology, compatible with iPhones and Apple Watches, allowing users to lock, unlock, and start the car without a physical key. Up to 16 users can share the digital key via platforms like AirDrop or iMessage.

Mercedes-Benz has also introduced a new compatibility layer for third-party apps. Drivers can now use apps like Zoom, Webex, and TikTok directly from the car’s interface. To prevent distractions, video transmission is deactivated while driving.

Drive System

The new E-Class sets a benchmark for efficiency with its smart electrification and downsizing. The E 200 features a four-cylinder engine paired with tailored electrification.

The petrol engine is supported by an integrated starter-generator (ISG) along with turbocharging. The mild-hybrid’s electric motor power has been upgraded from 15 kW to 17 kW, delivering 205 Nm of boost torque.

The E 350 e, with an electric output of 95 kW (129 hp), offers an all-electric range of up to 118 kilometers (WLTP), enabling it to operate solely on electric power in many cases. The system’s total output reaches 230 kW (313 hp).

High power density is achieved through a permanently excited synchronous motor with an internal rotor. The electric motor delivers 550 Nm of torque right from the start, ensuring quick acceleration and dynamic driving. The full electric power is available up to 140 km/h, after which it is gently limited.

The vehicle features an intelligent electromechanical brake booster, seamlessly blending electric recuperation and hydraulic braking. During deceleration, the automatic transmission shifts through gears. Depending on the driving situation, the vacuum-independent braking system ensures a smooth transition between hydraulic braking and recuperation. This system helps maintain maximum recuperation power as the vehicle slows, even with constant pedal pressure.

Enhanced Safety and Assistance Features

The E-Class comes with a suite of driving assistance systems, including ATTENTION ASSIST, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and a Parking Package with a 360-degree camera. Assistance system status and activity are displayed in full-screen mode on the driver’s display. The Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC system helps regulate speed according to surrounding traffic, with adjustable safety distances.

Driving Assistance Plus Package: Enhanced Functionality

The Driving Assistance Package Plus includes Active Steering Assist for lane-keeping. The E-Class can now start off automatically in stop-and-go traffic on city streets and country roads, resuming within 30 seconds if the driver’s hands are on the steering wheel.

Additional features include improved lane detection at low speeds with the help of a 360° camera, better cornering on rural roads, and enhanced lane centring on highways. In certain situations, the vehicle can shift off the lane’s centre (such as creating an emergency corridor or following road edges where no centre markings exist).

The Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC in the Parking Package is now more intuitive, allowing activation via the touch screen. Automated parking and unparking are quicker, with speeds reaching up to 4 km/h, and warning tones have been removed during the process.

Burmester 4D Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos

The E 350 e comes equipped with the Burmester® 4D surround sound system, offering a multi-dimensional audio experience. With Dolby Atmos® and Spatial Audio, sound can be experienced from all directions, turning every journey into a cinematic experience.

A Balance of Efficiency and Performance

With an aerodynamic Cd figure as low as 0.23, the new E-Class maintains the high standard set by its predecessor. This excellent performance is achieved despite the larger wheel options and increased underbody cavities, ensuring the new E-Class is both efficient and powerful.

The operating strategy interacts with the sensors from the assistance systems to support the driver in various driving situations. Two driving modes optimize the use of the plug-in powertrain:

• BATTERY HOLD Prioritizes maintaining the battery charge, ideal for city driving, with the hybrid system selecting the most suitable drive configuration based on driving conditions and the route.

• ELECTRIC Allows electric driving up to 140 km/h. The combustion engine can be activated by applying extra pressure on the accelerator pedal.

The energy recovery system recuperates kinetic energy during deceleration or downhill driving, enhanced by the integration with the hydraulic brake. Up to 100 kW of power can be recovered. In DAuto mode, the system adjusts recuperation levels based on traffic. Drivers can also manually control energy recovery across three stages using rocker switches behind the steering wheel, except in SPORT mode. In D-mode, a "one-pedal" experience allows deceleration without the need for the hydraulic brake.

The high-voltage (HV) battery is an in-house development by Mercedes-Benz AG, part of the fourth-generation family of batteries, and an evolution from its predecessor. It consists of 96 cells in a pouch configuration, with 25.4 kWh of energy content, 19.5 kWh of which is usable for electric driving. The HV battery includes an internal cooling system to handle the high energy density.

The thermal management system controls battery temperature independently of the vehicle’s interior climate control. This supports continuous operation in extreme climates and allows fast direct-current charging. When fully depleted, the battery can be recharged in around 30 minutes using the onboard 55 kW DC charger.
