Oris announces the sixth edition of its Air Racing series, inspired by the world’s fastest motor sport

There are few more spectacular sights in aviation than that of a plane flying at 500km/h (300mph) over the Nevada desert floor. At the world-famous Reno Air Races, the last remaining closed course pylon race and the fastest motor sport in the world, daredevil pilots fly their aircraft so low you feel you could reach out and touch them.

One of those pilots is Swiss aviator and Oris ambassador Don Vito Wyprächtiger, the first non-American to win Reno’s Formula One Gold race. It was Don Vito’s achievements that inspired the Air Racing collection of Oris pilot’s watches – this year, Oris is proud to announce the sixth edition in the line, the Air Racing Edition VI.In keeping with the pilot’s watch aesthetic, the Air Racing Edition VI has been designed to be robust, accurate and, above all, supremely legible. Since the dawn of pilot’s watches more than 100 years ago, the challenge has always been to make a practical, reliable wristwatch that can be read off at a glance. A pilot’s watch is a tool, an addition to a cockpit instrument panel.

The watch’s 45mm steel case is coated in stealthy, anti-reflective gunmetal grey PVD and is water-resistant to 10 bar/100 metres. The case back is engraved with an outline of Don Vito’s Scarlet Screamer flying past a Reno pylon, and also with the limited edition number. Only 1,000 pieces will be made.

The finishing touch is the grey textile strap lined with yellow leather to match the day and date indications. The strap has a stainless steel folding clasp, also coated in gunmetal grey PVD. The new Oris Air Racing Edition VI is the first in the line to feature this combination of gunmetal grey and yellow. It’s a worthy addition to one of Oris’s sportiest line of watches, and a fitting tribute to one of Switzerland’s most talented pilots. It will be available in October, priced MYR 8,800.

This is in mind, the Air Racing Edition VI has a black dial with sharp, white Arabic numerals and hour markers printed in luminescent Super-LumiNova®. The clean, functional hour and minute hands are filled with the same material. This means the watch can be read quickly in any light conditions.

The day and date indications at 3 o’clock are yellow, inspired by the marking displaying the caution range on a cockpit speed indicator (usually in knots). The watch also has a yellow-tipped sweeping seconds hand, powered by the watch’s automatic movement. Yellow is one of the most visible colours in low-light conditions.
